Ages 3–7

The first snow had fallen in the forest. Everything around turned white and quiet.
A big, brown bear named Bruno knew what this meant.
It was time for a long, winter sleep.
Bruno walked slowly to his cave.
He walked very slowly.
His paws were big and heavy.
Thump… thump… thump…
With every step, Bruno felt sleepier and sleepier.
He went inside his cave. Inside, there was no wind and no snow.
It was dry, quiet, and safe.
It smelled of moss and pine trees.
Bruno looked around. In the corner, a bed of soft leaves was waiting for him.
“Oh, how nice,” hummed the bear.
He lay down on his side.
His fur was thick and warm.
Bruno felt how pleasant it was to lie down and do nothing.
He thought about his paws.
His front paws were now very, very heavy. So heavy that he didn’t want to lift them at all.
They lay still on the soft moss.
His back paws became heavy too.
They were resting after the long walk.
He felt warmth in his big tummy. His tummy rose and fell.
Up… and down.
Up… and down.
“I am safe now,” thought Bruno. “I have warm fur and a soft bed.”
Outside, the quiet snow was falling, covering the world with a white blanket.
But the bear didn’t hear it.
His breathing was deep and steady.
Huuu… shhh…
Bruno closed his little eyes.
He felt only warmth and peace.
He fell asleep to dream of sweet honey and the summer sun.
You have a warm bed too.
Your hands are resting too, just like the bear’s paws.
You are warm and comfortable.
Goodnight, Bruno the Bear.
Goodnight, little one.
If you were a bear going into a winter sleep, what is the softest thing you would like to have in your cave?
