Leo the Dump Truck Drops His Load

4 min read aloud

A quick word for parents: This story is a tool for children who feel “overstimulated” and full of racing thoughts after a busy day. We use the metaphor of a dump truck dropping its heavy load to help the child physically and mentally let go of tension.

Tired yellow dump truck Leo in a sandbox, his bed full of sand and toy blocks

A yellow Dump Truck named Leo had a wonderful day.
He carried big blocks.
He poured mounds of sand.
He backed up, beeping loudly: beep, beep, beep!

But now it was dark at the construction site.
The excavators had been asleep for a long time.

Only Leo was still standing in the middle of the sandbox.
His big, metal bed on his back was full.
“I have so many memories from the whole day in there,” sighed Leo. “Playing, jumping, loud laughs… It’s all awfully heavy.”
Leo felt his big tires bending under this weight.

Then, Barnaby the Steamroller emerged from the shadows.
Barnaby always drove very slow-ly.
His big, heavy wheel in the front smoothed out every road. He was calm and quiet.

“Good evening, Leo,” purred Barnaby softly. “You look like you are carrying the whole day on your back. It’s time to drop this load.”

Leo blinked the orange light on his roof.
“But how?”

“When the bed is empty, it’s easier for the engine to fall asleep,” smiled the Steamroller.

Leo tipping out his load of sand and blocks while a small road roller watches

“Let’s do it together.”

🌙 Evening mini-ritual (do it together)

Barnaby said slowly:
“We take a deep breath in through the nose… and we lift our dump truck bed as high as we can.”
Leo took a breath and lifted his bed up.

“And now we let out a long breath through the mouth: shhhhhh… and we let all the weight fall off us.”
Leo breathed out. All the sand and all the loud thoughts spilled onto the ground.

“One more time. Breathe in… lift the bed. And breathe out: shhhhhh… drop the load.”

Leo suddenly felt very light.
His tires sighed with relief.

Together they whispered the bedtime phrase:
“I am dropping the weight. My engine is light.”

Barnaby slowly drove over the spilled sand.
He rolled it out so it became flat, smooth, and soft like a blanket.
“The road to sleep is straight now,” whispered the Steamroller.

Leo rolled under his roofed garage.
Without the heavy load, driving was so easy.
His big engine stopped growling and started to hum evenly and calmly.

It was cozy in the garage.
Leo turned off his orange warning light on his roof.
Click. It went out.

Then he turned off his big front headlights.
Click, click. They went out.

Sleepy Leo parked in a cozy wooden garage at night

It became dark.
Leo’s body became pleasantly warm, and his big wheels had no desire to go anywhere anymore.

“Goodnight, construction site,” whispered Leo.
“Goodnight, empty tummy.”

🌟 Mini-ritual right before sleep (10 seconds)

Whisper together: “I am dropping the weight. My engine is light.”
Then: 1 long hug (so the engine feels 100% safe) + 1 slow, deep breath.

Leo the Dump Truck fell asleep, and a soft, peaceful silence fell over the construction site.
The End. 🌙✨

Leo the Dump Truck dropped his whole heavy day off his back so he could fall asleep. If you had your own invisible dump truck, what heaviest or loudest thought from today would you drop from it?
