Express to the Land of Silence: Your Journey Outside of Time
Why your mind needs a journey outside of time 🚂
The concept of “time” is often our biggest stressor. Deadlines, schedules, and alarms keep our nervous system in a state of constant alertness. To sleep better, we sometimes need to mentally depart from the calendar.
Express to the Land of Silence is a narrative technique designed to transport your focus from the “logical” brain to the “sensory” brain.
- Rhythm: The cadence of the train mimics a slow, resting heartbeat.
- Safety: There are no tickets to check, no stations to miss, and no destination other than sleep.
The following story is designed to be read slowly. Let each sentence settle before moving to the next.
Express to the Land of Silence: Your Journey Outside of Time
Before you begin reading, take a deep breath. Let the air fill your lungs, and then slowly release it along with the heavy weight of the past day.
Leave this day behind the door. All unfinished emails, unmade calls, to-do lists, and minor anxieties… they can wait. They do not matter here. Now you stand on a platform you won’t find on any map. There are no clocks counting down the seconds. There is only soothing, cool, crisp air and the soft, amber glow of streetlamps painting long, calm shadows on the ground.
A light appears in the distance. Do you hear it? A faint, rhythmic clatter that brings no fear, but a promise of peace. It is your train. It has no number, no specific destination, for the only place it is heading is your own silence.
It approaches almost soundlessly, its wagons the color of deep navy, almost black, like the sky on a moonless night. The doors open with a quiet hiss. You step inside, and you are greeted by the most pleasant scent imaginable:
- The aroma of freshly brewed tea with bergamot,
- A delicate note of sandalwood,
- The smell of paper from old, long-unopened books.
You walk across a soft, thick carpet that muffles your every step. You find your compartment. When you slide the door open, you feel a sense of absolute safety washing over you. It is incredibly cozy here.
The sofa is upholstered in thick, soft velvet the color of dark moss. You sit down, and your body reacts immediately, becoming a kilogram heavier, melting into the softness of the fabric. On the table by the window stands a ceramic mug, steam still rising from it. You lean your head against the cool, smooth glass. The train moves… so slowly and smoothly that you only notice it because the lanterns on the platform begin to drift slowly backward.
Clack-clack. Clack-clack.
The train picks up a steady pace. Outside the window, the world begins to blur into a soothing abstraction. Cities turn into long streaks of gold and silver lights that flicker like fireflies, then vanish, giving way to dark, dense forests and vast meadows bathed in mist.
You don’t have to do anything. No one wants anything from you. You don’t have to be anywhere on time, because the journey is more important than the destination. Your only task is to watch as single raindrops dance on the glass, merging and tracing slow, lazy lines.
The light in the compartment dims on its own, leaving only a gentle, blue glow of the night. You feel your shoulders relax, the tension in your neck release, and your eyelids becoming pleasantly heavy.
The rhythm of the train wheels—that measured clack-clack—synchronizes with your breath. With every mile, your thoughts become sparser, more transparent, until finally, they turn into a sleepy mist floating over the valleys you are passing through.
You close your eyes, but you still feel the gentle rocking of the wagon. You are safe. You are wrapped in silence and velvet. The train continues, carrying you through the night, until sleep comes naturally, like the final station of this journey.
Goodnight.
